What is Anorexia?

Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as anorexia, is an eating disorder characterized by a persistent restriction of food intake, resulting in significantly low body weight. It is often accompanied by an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even when the person is underweight.

The root cause of loss of appetite is mostly psychological. Anorexia occurs when it is not possible to prevent individuals from perceiving themselves as overweight. Even though the person's weight is normal from a medical standpoint, they cannot prevent themselves from seeing themselves as fat. This condition continues until it disrupts the body's vital functions. Excessive weight loss due to loss of appetite leads to certain physical complaints.

In women, excessive weight loss disrupts the metabolism of sexual hormones and leads to the cessation of menstrual periods. Similarly, an increase in hair growth can be observed due to a similar hormonal imbalance. Due to the impact on the body's defense metabolism, the frequency of illnesses increases. Sleep decreases, there is an increase in restlessness and a desire for movement despite sleep deprivation.
